Die Mechanik- und Elektronik-Präzisionshardware, die uns Anfang der 1960er Jahre als NASA-Technik vorlag, forderte nach Erfahrungen im Vorgang der Systemtestprozeduren und der kritischen Beurteilungen bestimmter ortsabhängiger Einstell- und Ausgabewerte zur mathematischen Überprüfung heraus, um zu sehen, ob die technische Kunst der amerikanischen Entwickler in deren geografischer Region zu 100% auch unter den hiesigen geografischen Bedingungen galt, oder ob sie einer entsprechenden Modifikation bedurfte ja, im Bereich der Schulerschwingung bedurfte sie.
The mechanics and electronics precision hardware, as NASA technology present to us in the beginning of the 1960s, challenged after experiences in the process of the system test procedures and the critical evaluations of certain location-dependent setting and output values to a mathematical examination, in order to see whether the technical art of the American developers in their geographical region was valid to 100% also under our local geographical conditions, or whether it needed an appropriate modification yes, in the area of the "schuler oscillation" it needed.
The recalculation of the Schuler test tolerances for the Hamburg site, about
equally Freiburg, became to me an interesting analytical occupation concerning the physical conditions of the eastward rotating planet earth around
its north-south axis relating to the test tolerance data. The consideration of the universally effective Coriolis force and its electronically mathematical compensation was given, however the consideration of the Schuler oscillation values showed critical limit values related to Palmdale, USA, so they had
to be urgently revised, related to Hamburg and Freiburg.
Schuler oscillation? Maximilian Schuler (1882-1972) knew that a gimbaled system (e.g. gyrocompass platform) will start to swing like a pendulum by acceleration (e.g. Starfighter), so unacceptable false signals occur for navigation (ship, especially airplane). Schuler used as a compensation idea the Schuler pendulum, named after him, whose hypothetical thread length corresponds to the distance of the earth radius (6371 km). The pendulum period would be as a geodetic constant (rounded) 84.4 minutes, but the pendulum mass would remain fixed in the center of the earth and would be independent from the place of suspension of the pendulum and its acceleration parallel to the earth's surface. If now a system capable of oscillating is the electronically continuously controlled Schuler oscillation period forced on, then any physical contribution to the oscillation tendency is immediately suppressed. The system remains stable, the accelerometers remain coordinately aligned and provide signals originating from the aircraft motion. Navigation errors caused by acceleration due to the earth's gravity are excluded in this way.
Die Einstellung neuer Mitarbeiter beim Aufbau der Systemtest-Abteilung in Freiburg oblag meiner Verantwortung. Voraussetzung für die Annahme eines Bewerbers war nicht allein seine bisherige berufliche Qualifikation. Wie stand er zum Fortschritt in Technik und Teamwork? War er kommunikativ, teamfähig, konzentriert? Welche Fachzeitschriften interessierten ihn? Hatte er von digitaler Technik gehört, die sich zögerlich durchzusetzen begann? Wie stellte er sich zum interdisziplinären Gesamtgeschehen in diesem Haus?
The hiring of new employees during the establishment of the department in Freiburg was my responsibility. The prerequisite for the acceptance of an applicant were not only his previous professional qualifications. What was his attitude to progress in technology and teamwork? Was he communicative, a team player, focused? Which technical journals interested him? Had he heard of digital technology, which was hesitantly beginning to take hold? How did he relate to the interdisciplinary overall events in this house?
Only male applicants had presented themselves. Ms. Dressler remained our only "female wealth of experience". Training courses drove me for weeks from the actual work to teaching not only the new employees, but also many field colleagues and, not infrequently, German Armed Forces members, pilots and responsible ground personnel. My deputy G. Broesan then took over the "real work" without any qualitative deficit. A verbal Bundeswehr offer to teach prospective pilots in Kaufbeuren, I declined. What should I do in Kaufbeuren. The clearly progress, especially in the electronic field, would have passed me by in practical application. Two dozen new journals were arriving on my desk every month, a third of them from the USA. The progress came from there. Our universities and the European industry were not yet ready. Otherwise Franz Josef Strauss would not have had to go to Lockheed to buy their aircraft. The fighter-bomber was expensive, because every smallest component was expensive, but its quality was unbeatable in precision, long-term stability and temperature stability. I am not talking here about the F104G's flight behavior.
Den Umgang mit langzeitlich durchzuführenden Systemtest-Aufzeichnungen und messtechnisch aufgezeichnetem Datenmaterial konnte man nur in der Praxis erlernen und erproben. Der LN-3-Computer gehörte, wie oft schon erwähnt, zu den Generationen der Analog-Computer. Alle Funktionsschaltungen dieses Computers waren jeweils zweckbestimmt konzipiert und entwickelt. Sie dienten allein der nur ihnen zugedachten bestimmten Aufgabe. Die Software für jede einzelne elektronische, mechanische, physikalisch-technische Funktion befand sich in den Köpfen außergewöhnlich begabter, technisch phantasiereicher Entwickler, basierend auf naturwissenschaftlich stimmigen Erkenntnissen.
The handling of long-term system test records and recorded measurement data could only be learned and tried and tested in practice. The LN-3 computer belonged, as often already mentioned, to the generation of analog computers. All functional circuits of this computer were designed and developed for a specific purpose. The circuits served only the specific task assigned only to them. The "software" for each individual electronic, mechanical, physical-technical function was located in the heads of extraordinarily talented, technically imaginative developers, based on scientifically coherent findings.
This kind of "software" as a way of clear-thinking was what constitutes technical ingenuity when a functional complex is to put on paper: The intelligence of the technicians who bring functioning hardware units into development from the not yet sorted out pile of ideas and sketches and planning stages. Digital technology was not yet in tangible sight, meaningful programmable technical software far from it. For this existed the sensitivity of each specialist for every functional detail, when dealing with discrete components and their mutual interaction, with analog functions and with a sure instinct for conditions which had to consider other conditions, and also when he was able to understand even the shortest signal course as a reflection of a fleeting physical effect, and to understand it in order to include it into the overall work if this phenomenon the whole system behavior would disturb or if the system would still be imperfect without it.
